What you’ll learn
The kanna is the crown jewel of Japanese woodworking tools. It’s equally mysterious and rewarding. There is nothing more satisfying than taking whisper thing shavings that leave an amazing shine on the surface of wood.
In traditional woodwork in Japan, no sand paper is used, the final finish is done with a hand plane or kanna. The luster and beauty that is brought out with a well tuned and sharpened plane is unparalleled. That’s what we’ll be learning in this class. So, if you’re training for a kezuroukai, want to incorporate kanna shiage in your work, or just want to go deeper with your hand planes, this class will explore the many facets of this enigmatic tool.
Different types of practice wood will be provided, however if you have some pieces of your own or even a project you would like to learn to finish, feel free to bring those for the class.
By the end of the class, you'll leave with:
• A deeper understanding of the Japanese hand plane
• Knowledge of how to fine tune and sharpen your blade to get thin shavings and no tear out even on difficult woods
