Classes in the NYC area

I offer small, in person Japanese woodworking classes in the NYC area and New Jersey focused on traditional hand tools and joinery. These Beginner-friendly workshops are held at my personal studio in Newark, NJ. My studio is located a short train ride via the Path from NYC or there is also a few parking spaces available for those who wish to drive. I will send you an exact address after sign up with instructions on how to get to the studio. Hope to see you there!

Intro to Japanese Woodworking 101

In this class we'll go over all the basics. The tools, the joinery, the types of wood. It will be 3 hours of immersing yourself into the world of Japanese Woodworking. I'll discuss all the tools that you will need when just getting started, as well as different wood joints for future projects, and what woods you will need for each type of project. We'll also discuss setting up your workspace with workbench, etc. There will be various stations where you can try out each tool. If you’re interested in getting started with Japanese style woodworking or you’re just curious, this is a great place to start.

Mortise & Tenon with Japanese Hand Tools

In this class we’ll learn how to make the through mortise and tenon, the basis for all Japanese joinery. Using only a saw, chisel, and marking gauge, we will learn everything from the basics of using the tools all the way to finished joint. This is an excellent class if you’re looking to create a good foundation to getting started in Japanese joinery. This class will be for 4 hours and I have tools available if needed, or you can bring and use your own. This class will be at my new studio in Newark, NJ.

Hinoki Bath Stool Class

This class was designed so that anyone can make this little stool. All the parts are dimensioned and ready to work. In this class we’ll go over cutting the box joints with wooden nails, and a wedged through tenon for the rail. You will come away from this class with a fun intro into Japanese style craft while making a beautiful stool with your own hands. We will be working with Hinoki wood imported from Japan which is an experience all its own. This wood is prized for how well it works with Japanese hand tools and its incredible aroma. All tools and materials will be provided, just show up and be ready to learn! This class will be at my new studio in Newark, NJ.
